Windows Appears to Stop responding at Start up

Windows XP may appear to stop responding on startup at the "Windows is

starting ..." splash screen.

A registry glitch identified with Windows XP may produce one or both of the following symptoms:

The Administrator Logon dialog box may be hidden under the "Windows is starting ..." splash screen.

This may appear as a lockup to the customer.

To work around this problem, press ALT+TAB to bring the dialog box to the front of the screen so

that you can log on to the computer with valid credentials.

The Log On to Windows dialog box may be displayed with incorrect credentials after the Autologon feature had been unsuccessful and you may receive the

following error message:

"The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct,

then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case."

To resolve this problem, click "Ok" on the error message dialog box and remove the appropriate registry key.

Delete the AutoAdminLogon registry key.

The registry path and setting is as follows:

            HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows

            NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

            The value is:

            AutoAdminLogon (REG_SZ): 1
