Startup Items List

For your computer to run effectively and efficiently you should have 70% plus system resources available immediately after starting the computer. After using the system for a while the resources will fluctuate this is normal. To determine the total resources your computer is utilizing first restart Windows. Once back into Windows click Start then click on Run, type in msconfig and click on OK. Once the window opens up, click on Help then About System Configuration Utility.

There should be a number percentage just above the OK button. If this number is less than 70% after a fresh boot, then you may want to free some resources. If the number is above the 70% mark then you may not need to free up additional resources.

To return to the msconfig window, click OK. If you decide to free up additional resources, here are the steps continuing from the msconfig utility. The five tabs at the top should be marked as follows:

If you have Windows 98: you should have the following: General, Config.sys, Autoexec.bat, System.ini, Win.ini, and Startup..

If you have Windows ME (Millennium): you should have the following: General, System.ini, Win.ini, Startup, Environment, International.

Start out by clicking on the Startup tab.

In the startup tab there will be a list of all the applications that are set to run once windows has loaded. These are the main resource utilizing programs because most are run constantly in the background. The list is usually quite long and if you have installed any Windows management software (typically these are the utilities that claim to do all updating and cleaning for you, be it system files, downloaded files or virus files) you will notice a lot of programs may be repetitive.

If software is not required to be loaded on boot uncheck the item. For example Microsoft Office preloads a few files. A couple are the find fast and office shortcut bar. If you find you are not using these, simply remove the checkmark and reboot. After you have cleaned up the startup group, we can reboot and follow the first steps to check for the resource percentage.

Important Note: If you are unclear of what a particular file is used for, it is best to contact the vendor of the software in order to determine how important it is for the file to load during boot up. If you are unable to locate the purpose of the file, you may wish to allow the file to continue loading to prevent any problems from occurring.

In an effort to clarify what these programs are and whether they are necessary the following list is provided. .

Items in BLUE may be related to pre-installed software on a Compaq Presario or software related to a Compaq printer.

Items in RED are related to viruses.
